Initiative description
Thurgood Marshall College Fund's (TMCF) Center for Innovative HBCU School Reform Partnerships was established to close academic achievement gaps and increase college readiness/preparation and college-going rates among students, especially those of color. In partnership with its member colleges and universities, TMCF views involvement in national reform efforts as a critical component to closing achievement gaps while ensuring a continuous pipeline of new leaders.
WHY IS TMCF INVOLVED IN SCHOOL REFORM?
Public Historically Black Colleges and Universities:
- have served as major teacher training institutions since their inception and graduated more than 50 percent of African-American public school teachers.
- serve as valuable resources of talent for a needed national pool of diverse teachers. As of fall 2003, approximately 230,000 students were enrolled in TMCF member institutions.
- and their colleges of education have a history of educating students K-12 in lab schools located on their campuses.
