The project
The TMCF Redesign Network, also referred to as the RADICAL Program (Reinventing Academic Development to Inspire Creative Achievement and Learning), is a key project within The Center for Innovative HBCU School Reform Partnerships.
The program, supported by a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, aims to create or redesign several small high schools. Our sites, located primarily in the south in economically distressed areas, were selected through a competitive process. These newly created and redesigned schools, located in Maryland, Texas, Louisiana, and North Carolina are expected to service more than 2,500 students.
Designing Excellence
Focusing on the “Three R’s”
The learning environment of school sin the TMCF Redesign Network is designed on the attributes of high-achieving model schools researched by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
The “Three R’s” – Rigor, Relationships, and Relevance in preparing students for college, work, and citizenship, are integral to the curriculum in all the schools. High expectations, respect and responsibility, and using technology as a tool are common themes. Students are expected to do well, and are provided with the resources they need to achieve success. The university partners provide programmatic support to teachers, administrators as well as college course enrolment opportunities to students.
